2009 Week 15

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

We enjoyed listening to General Conference this weekend.  It always seems so chaotic having the boys there in the room ‘listening’ while building legos, drawing, whatever else they are doing.  But they continue to surprise me with how much they do pick up on.  I’m grateful we have that opportunity, and I have to trust that that, along with the many other efforts large and small, will give them each a solid foundation in the gospel, and the desire to gain their own testimony and live accordingly.

Sunday was also Trent’s 9th birthday.  Perfect timing to have some fun things to do during General Conference.  Trent loves computer games and video games.  He enjoys school and does well in all subjects.  He loves to laugh — he’s always had the heartiest belly-laugh that is contagious.  He’s great fun to have around.

Last Friday we also attended the re-scheduled Pinewood Derby for the Cub Scout Pack.  Caleb has graduated from Cub Scouts, and only Trent made a car this year.  Our cars are always middle-of-the-pack in speed, but the boys have a lot of fun designing and building them.  Trent won one of the Best In Show awards this time around, so he was thrilled.

The Derby was rescheduled due to a late-spring snowstorm the previous week — the boys finally had a snow day.

We got more snow on Saturday, which means the first two weeks of soccer games have also been snowed out.  Hopefully we get to play this coming Saturday.  One last snowstorm is currently on the forecast for Sunday, though… Hope I get one more chance to get bundled up and shovel the driveway!

2009 Week 14

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Just to illustrate how long it’s been since I posted a family update — here are pictures from Alec’s birthday party in January.  We did a ’science lab’ party, culminating with Diet Coke & Mento rockets / fountains in the driveway.  Fun for all :)

Caleb’s birthday was also in January, but we just had his birthday party a few weeks ago — I took him and a couple friends to play paintball, so we had to wait for nice enough weather on a weekend that was open.

Weekends were not open through most of January and February, due to Caleb and Trent playing basketball.  Kim was the coach for Trent’s team, and that was a fun experience for all involved.

Early in March, the older boys all played in a violin recital.  I played duets with Caleb and Trent, but Alec wasn’t happy with the way I played Twinkle Variations with him, so I was banned…

For Spring Break, the plan was to mostly relax around home, but we ended up scheduling a trip to Copper Mountain for some skiing at the last minute.  Last minute trips mean no relaxation whatsoever, but it was fun, we made lots of good memories.  Trent was just getting comfortable on the skis when he took a little tumble.  He was okay, but was just laying there, when another man came up to see how he was (turned out to be a doctor).  Trent said the man told him not to move, so he didn’t, even though he was fine.  He ended up getting a trip down the mountain in the ski patrol toboggan, while I waited at the botttom of the run wondering what had happened to him.  He thought it was great fun.

I was finally released as Ward Clerk last week.  It was a great experience to work with the bishopric and other leaders, and learn more of the administration of the Church.  With all of us essentially untrained volunteers, it is indeed a miracle that work of the Church carries on despite our best efforts :)   I was asked to serve next as a Scoutmaster for the 11-yr-old boys (which includes Caleb).  I’m looking forward to that, if not so much to sitting in primary each week.  It will be great to be with the boys each week, at least.

By and large, things are going well for us.  Kim’s busy as always managing the family, planning and prepping the garden, and keeping us all fed (very well, I might add).  We’re planning our summer projects, deciding on priorities.  The big projects competing for time and other resources will be sprinklers, a bay window, a patio in the front and redoing the front stoop / entryway.  Plenty to keep us all busy.

2008 Week 52 — Merry Christmas

Monday, December 29th, 2008

We had a fun but hectic week with Christmas festivities.  Unfortunately I didn’t get many photos, especially not from Christmas itself… :(

We spent one day in Co Springs with the Mills side of the family.  We all went and played around at Pump it Up for a bit.  Got pretty competitive with the adults making an obstacle course over all of the equipment.  I would have one if it weren’t for my bum knee…

Christmas Eve we had Ryan and Laurel over — due to a timely cookie delivery.  After dinner, we had are traditional reading of the Christmas story and playing with the creche, then we opened up the traditional Christmas Eve pajamas.  I really messed up on Kim’s (way too big… you’d think I’d have that figured out by now).

Christmas morning was lots of fun, and we relaxed for the rest of the day.  We did take our fleet of RC cars, planes, helicoptors over to the church to play in the gym for a while, which was a lot of fun.

It was a success overall, and a great time to be with family.

We also celebrated Kim’s birthday this week.  I worked with a friend in our ward (happens to be Kim’s VT) who designs her own jewelry and got her some necklaces and earrings.  Kim had no idea the friend even did that.  The surprise seemed well received.

2008 Week 51

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

This was the last week of school and work for us all… looking forward to the next two weeks off.  We’re basically spending it at home.

Saturday we had our annual event of building/decorating graham cracker “houses”.  We had the Carnley’s (Steve, Tiff, and Zach) over to share in the fun.

My creation this year was a giant spider / bug ridden by Santa.  Inspired by giant pretzel sticks, and I even had to get out the hair dryer to pull this one off.  It was fun to build, and I even impressed myself :)   However, pride got the better of me, and it collapsed when I was moving it to get a better picture…  Oh well.

This week, Caleb also was awared his Arrow of Light.  He’s just about done with Cub Scouts, and really looking forward to going on campouts and all the other fun of Boy Scouts.

Merry Christmas to all!

Fall family pictures

Monday, October 20th, 2008

We decided to take advantage of the great fall weather we’ve been enjoying, to take some family pictures.  Not perfect, but good memories…

Videos

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

We got a simple little video camera back at Christmas, but I haven’t bothered to upload / post anything before now… I spent a few minutes to see what’s involved, so here goes — a couple today from Colin visiting for dinner:

A couple comments on the yard: we just had the old patio torn out and a new stamped-concrete patio poured. Next comes the deck where the old patio was, then hopefully a sprinkler system so we can finally grow grass consistently. It’s going to be a busy summer :)

2008 Week 13

Monday, March 31st, 2008

It’s been a long time since I posted a general update. We’ve been busy. Most recently we built cars for the Pinewood Derby race. Trent is almost official in scouts, and Alec decided to make one, too, so we got to build three. It was rather involved trying to get them all done at once. At least they were all black…

For Easter we had a lot of fun decorating and hiding/finding eggs, as usual…

I made the mistake at one point of tossing one of Mark’s eggs into his basket. He immediately decided that throwing the eggs looked like much more fun than picking them up.

This past week we started the spring soccer season, with Caleb, Trent and Alec all playing again. Kim and I are team-coaching Alec’s team, which should be fun. We didn’t really account for Mark in planning how to run practices, however, so that will be an interesting challenge as always.

2006 Week 46

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

My birthday was last week. Happy birthday to me. I’ve been recovering from a bad ankle sprain the last few weeks. Playing ultimate is one of my favorite things, so it’s pretty frustrating when I can’t.

We also celebrated Mark’s 1st birtday a few weeks ago. Mark and my other boys definitely rank very high on my list of favorites.

Harvesting pumpkins from the gardenHarvesting pumpkins from the garden

Halloween was fun for the boys, but I think the most fun was harvesting the pumpkins from our garden, then carving them together. The fall weather has been awesome, and we’ve enjoyed lots of outdoor activities, including some corn mazes.

At the corn maze, we saw a large trebuchet for launching pumpkins. We were all impressed by that. It was the inspiration for Trent’s simple machine project — we chose to launch jumbo marshmallows, and he had a lot of fun demoing it at school.

2007 Week 40

Monday, October 8th, 2007

October already… general conference was this weekend, very uplifting as usual. I even managed to watch most all of it — we have the rest recorded for later. Something to do while I fold laundry tomorrow night. But more on conference later. First, the most important part — pictures here:

1974

A quick recap on September and into October:

  • Alec ended up having his two front teeth removed after his bicycle accident. Just means he’ll be toothless for a few years.
  • The boys started school — 4th, 2nd, and preschool.
  • Soccer season started as well. Three games every Saturday. It’s tough to have both of us there at all of them, but I know the boys appreciate it when we do. It’s Alec’s first season, and he rocks :) Trent is now at the level with goalies. He loves defense and forward. He’s been nick-named ‘The Wall’. Caleb’s now playing on the intermediate league, and it’s fun to see how they are really starting to play soccer!
  • Mark is walking a few steps now. He loves the dog, the dog puts up with him really well.

The elk rut at RMNPThe elk rut at RMNPThis week, we took a little trip to Rocky Mountain National Park to see the Elk rut. It was a beautiful day in the mountains, and it was cool to see (and hear) the big bulls bugling to gather their harems together. In one part of the valley (Moraine Park), the cows were grazing up within 10 feet of the cars and people. It was a fun experience.

Making trench for electrical wiring to shedMaking trench for electrical wiring to shedI spent Friday / Saturday digging a trench for conduit to put in an electrical line out to our shed. The older boys ‘helped’ a bit too — mostly they enjoyed playing in the dirt and throwing dirt clods. I was hurrying to get it dug and put in the conduit before the forecasted storm moved in Saturday night, but that never materialized.

Laying the electrical lines is the first step in a bunch of work we have planned for the back yard. It’s slow going, though, as it often has to take back seat to other priorities. But we are anxious to be able to enjoy our yard more.

I really enjoyed watching / listening to conference. I just want to write a few of the thoughts that were memorable to me:

  • The calling of President Eyring to the First Presidency, and Elder Cook to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
  • Elder Ballard’s message about being prepared to share the gospel — know what we want to say, answer the question being asked. Few people will have the time or patience to listen to an hour discourse on the church. We can be more effective with a few specific points.
  • President Eyring’s counsel to pray for others instead of ourselves. Forget our own concerns and shortcomings. True power in prayer and in priesthood service comes from focusing on the needs of others, seeking to understand their needs and find ways to serve them.
  • President Monson’s anecdote about the boy with ‘flaming red hair’ — followed by President Hinckley’s challenge to him to dye his own hair!
  • Elder Oak’s talk on good, better, best. It really is easy to merely be a good person, so much more to seek and exemplify the best in all we do.
  • President Hinckley: Singers can sing the same song over and over again, orchestras repeat the same works, but a speaker is expected to give a new message each time… I enjoy his wit, as well as his words of testimony and counsel.

2007 Week 35

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Hey mom — look familiar?

alec-with-smashed-face.jpg

jr-with-smashed-face.jpg

Alec has only been riding a bicycle for a few weeks. Saturday he was following his brothers to the park, and got out of control going down a hill. I was a bit older when I did the same thing (was that the first or the second time?) There’s still some concern that he may have a more serious injury with his arm — that after a broken hand last fall and a broken arm last spring. And just in time for school…

Yes, Caleb, Trent, and Alec will finally be starting back to school this week. Soccer practices started two weeks ago, so we’re getting back into the full swing. Kim and crew went to help out with Caleb’s and Trent’s teachers to get their classrooms ready. Caleb has his first male teacher this year, which is exciting for him.

Congrats to my parents on reaching 38 years.  Sure, I understand more all the time that they are not perfect, but I certainly respect them for what they have done together.  Almost 12 years already for me and Kim — I think we’ve done lots of good stuff together so far together, too :)

To conclude, I’ll pass along a thought from Bishop Foster this morning, taken from 2 Timothy 2:2

And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

The point he shared is that in our ministering and administering, a big part of our duty is to “teach others also” and “commit … to faithful men” that they may also be engaged.  Many things are easier and most quickly done when we do them ourselves.  But we are expected to work with and through others, that we all benefit from the chance to serve and learn from each other.  I certainly see that as a stumbling block for me, in my personal and professional life, as well as serving in the church.  As I’ve heard it said: we have to allow others to grow on our time.
